Tread softly
by Jessi Purviance
Seven months have passed since I've written here.
It's winter again. 2011 is here with all of its promises.
New, fresh and bleached white.
This day is just one of many snow-covered afternoons, but this one was beautiful.
Peaceful.
Clear blue skies.

There are times when my valley is alive with sounds.
River waters crashing over rocks, dogs barking,
rafters shouting as they traverse the rapids.
This time of year it is quiet along the Payette.

Sun rays stream through the trees and warm my face.
Snow particles cascade down from branches, sparkling as they catch the light.

My snowshoes crunch in muffled rhythms down the path left by a snowmobile.
When I stop, all is silent.
When I stop, all is silent.

Even my dogs are quiet.
They are worn out from chasing each other through the snow and gnawing on a leg of a dead elk they found somewhere on the mountain. Coarse elk fur is scattered on the snow by their pen.
The dogs follow in my footsteps, silently treading on their pads.

Our road is icy and treacherous. Not many people venture up this far this time of year. They know the risks, and prefer the safety of their homes in town. We continue to drive it, praying that each time our vehicles will persevere.
Some vehicles no longer even try.

Tomorrow, I will drive down and start work and school again.
This is the semester when I will graduate from college.
Today, it was good to stop, breathe deeply and immerse myself into the beauty of a single moment of peace.
Life's chaos will start again tomorrow.
